Swansea: Wales’ City of Culture

Swansea maybe small on the map but there’s plenty to do in this vibrant, multi-cultural city. We’ve rounded up some of the highlights.

Renowned Nightlife

If you ask a student what they love most about studying in Swansea, you can bet that the thriving nightlife is top of the list. Wind Street is the place to be for any student on a Wednesday night; one long strip of pubs, bars, clubs and restaurants. If you’re looking for a more relaxed night out, you can head to Uplands where you’ll find quirky bars and eateries.

Plus, the city won the Purple Flag Award for being the safest night time experience in the UK in 2015 so you don’t have to worry when you’re out enjoying yourself.

World Famous Beaches

Get out and explore the Gower peninsula, which was the UK’s first Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Rhossili Bay is the jewel of the coastline which boosts stunning views looking out to the small tidal island, Worm’s Head and has featured in TripAdvisor’s list of the World’s Top 10 Best Beaches. You can even give surfing a try at Langland Bay or Llangennith.

A Taste for all Things Cultured 

If the great outdoors isn’t your bag not to worry, head to the National Waterfront Museum, where a number of events and exhibitions take place all year round or the recently-renovated Glynn Vivian Art Gallery home to a number of collections covering a broad spectrum of the visual arts from old masters to contemporary artists. Admission is free for both venues.

Walk in Dylan Thomas’ Footsteps

Poet and author Dylan Thomas, perhaps known most famously for the play Under Milk Wood and the poem Do not go gentle into that good night was born in Swansea and many locations in the area, from bars to beaches, influenced his work. Head to the Dylan Thomas Centre to learn more about his life and work.

The Green, Green Grass of Home 

It’s not all about the beach in Swansea, there’s also beautiful botanical gardens in Singleton Park, which is conveniently the campus location of Swansea University, and Clyne Gardens; the perfect picnic spots when you’re looking for a break from revision.
